The Jobseeker’s Guide to the Holiday Job Search

Everyone knows that this time of year can be challenging for many. It can be tricky to balance your job search, personal life, COVID-19, and the holidays. Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season is actually an ideal time to boost your job search efforts.

Although it may be tempting to take a break from job searching until the New Year, it’s important to maintain your job search as a priority—even if hiring activity appears to slow down. Below are some reasons to continue your job search during the holidays, along with tips to help you make the most of it.

Reasons to Continue Job Searching During the Holidays

  • Less competition: Many job seekers pause their search during the holidays, which means fewer applicants. This gives you a great opportunity to stand out and make progress with potential employers.
  • Hiring happens year-round: Some employers are under pressure to fill roles before year-end. If you find a job that interests you, don’t wait—tailor your résumé and cover letter and apply.
  • Temporary roles can lead to permanent work: Seasonal or contract jobs can turn into full-time positions. These opportunities can also help you build skills, strengthen your résumé, and expand your network.
  • Start dates can be negotiated: If you’re concerned about starting a new role during the busy season, remember that start dates are often flexible. It’s okay to ask for a later start as part of your negotiations.

Tips and Strategies for a Successful Holiday Job Search

  • Update your résumé and cover letter to highlight relevant experience, education, and accomplishments.
  • Make a list of potential employers—and check it twice! Identify the job characteristics that matter most to you and target organizations and roles that align with your goals.
